Players of Week 3 in Minnesota

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton was 2-7 last season. It took the Rebels three weeks to match that win total and they did it against the Class 3A’s No. 4-ranked team in the AP polls in Perham.

Here are your top area performances of Week 3 in Minnesota high school football.

Chad Johnson/Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s defense

D-G-F’s defense becomes the first unit to ever make the players of the week list, but the Rebels had a night versus a Perham team that had scored 83 points in the first two weeks. The Rebels held the Yellowjackets, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A by the Associated Press, scoreless until they found the end zone with 1:54 left in the game. The Rebels defense held Perham to 111 yards rushing and 77 yards passing in the 21-7 win.

Chad Johnson had two touchdowns and 108 yards on 25 carries and Chase Schuman had a big interception with Perham’s offense on the Rebels 1-yard line.

JD Kappes/Lance Ruebke – Ada-Borup

Kappes was 20-for-23 through the air for 244 yards and five touchdowns in Ada-Borup’s 64-37 demolishing of a Norman County East-Ulen-Hitterdal team that had given up six points total in the first two weeks. Lance Ruebke had 46 yards rushing and one touchdown, 55 yards receiving and one touchdown and a 95-yard kickoff return as well for Ada-Borup.

Blake Ohren – Ashby

Ohren had touchdown runs of 7 and 60 and found Reed Hanson for a 32-yard touchdown pass to get Ashby in the win column with a 42-36 win over Fergus Falls Hillcrest.

Michael Herzog – Detroit Lakes

Jarett Nosal took a screen pass 73 yards to account for Michael Herzog’s fourth TD.

Herzog ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in Detroit Lakes 29-22 win over previously undefeated Thief River Falls. Herzog finished with 69 rushing yards and 162 passing yards for the Lakers. Jarett Nosal (pictured above) certainly helped out Herzog on his touchdown pass as it was a 73-yard screen play to Nosal.

Hawley offense

Too hard to pick one player when three guys (Dillon Omberg, Ben Ellefson and Chris Buttke) each score two touchdowns and way too hard to ignore a 56-point outburst from the Nuggets, so the entire offense gets a nod in the 56-17 win over Pelican Rapids.

Mason Swegarden – Lake Park-Audubon

It was 2008 the last time Lake Park-Audubon started 3-0 and that team made it to the state semifinals. Couldn’t have gotten to 3-0 without Swegarden, who scored on a 35-yard touchdown run and found Jon Olson for touchdown passes of 67 and 30 in the 28-12 win over Fertile-Beltrami.

Dillon Card – Verndale

It was 2009 the last time Verndale started 3-0 and that Pirates team made it to state. Dillon Card led the Pirates to 3-0 with two rushing touchdowns and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Colter Ehrmantraut in the 38-12 win over Bertha-Hewitt.

Bob Bjorge – Mahnomen

Bob Bjorge is currently leading a vicious running attack that has Mahnomen 3-0 and winners of 17 straight dating back to last season. Bjorge was doing the same thing last season in this photo.

Mahnomen made it 17 wins in a row behind 350 yards rushing, 123 of which came from Bjorge, who also had two touchdowns.

Noah Brenden – Rothsay

Brenden had a 60-yard touchdown pass to go along with touchdown runs of 12, 55 and 7 in Rothsay’s 28-22 win over Norman County West.

Kyler Martz/Michael Strand – Barnesville

Martz was 10-for-12 for 157 yards and four touchdowns passing, two of which went to Strand, and Strand had 11 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns, along with a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown in Barnesville’s 46-6 thrashing of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
