This early season Eastern Dakota Conference dual between the Eagles and Packers should feature several individual that will be searching for state championships later this season. … West Fargo (1-0, 1-0) started the season picked to win the East Region and is coming of a first-place showing at last weekend’s Dan Unruh Memorial Tournament that included a total of 14 teams. … Davies (2-0, 2-3) spent the weekend at the Jackson County Central tournament in Minnesota finishing seventh out of 11 teams. … The Eagles are led by seniors Cole Alexander (170) and Hunter Swenson (285). .. The Packers bring back plenty of talent from its state championship team from a year ago including two defending state champions Jordan Shearer and Weston Dobler.
2. BOYS HOCKEY: Grand Forks Red River at Fargo South-Shanley (7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scheels Arena)
The defending North Dakota state champions are headed to Fargo for an East Region matchup with South-Shanley. … Red River (1-1-0 East Region, 1-2-0) will be looking to get back on track after a loss to Fargo Davies. … The Bruins (2-0-0, 2-1-0) are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over Fargo North last Friday.
3. BOYS BASKETBALL: Fargo Davies at Wahpeton (7:30 p.m. Thursday)
The Eagles and Huskies will both be making their season debuts. … Davies finished in third place last season and returns senior guards Tanner Kretchman and Andrew Kozlowski. … Both Kretchman and Kozlowski averaged double figures last season and will be two players the Eagles lean on as their starting front court from a year ago was lost to graduation. … The Huskies didn’t qualify for the state tournament last season, but return plenty of athleticism. … Senior Jack Christensen has plenty of varsity experience and knows how to lead a team after helping guide the Huskies to the Class 2A state football championship game a month ago.
4. BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER: Fargo Shanley at West Fargo (girls start at 6 p.m., boys start at 8 p.m. at WFHS)
The East Region boys and girls basketball season will be in full gear by the end of the week and the conference opening matchups between the Packers and Deacons should be very entertaining. The Shanley girls opened the season with a 61-32 win over Bismarck St. Mary’s and should get a good test from West Fargo, which finished runner up at the Class A state tournament last year. … Shanley’s boys squad opened with a 93-84 loss to St. Mary’s. … West Fargo senior forward Travis Schock returns as the team’s leading scorer and I could easily see this one turn into a shootout between Schock and Shanley’s Patrick Strom.
5. WRESTLING: Grand Forks Sertoma Tournament (10 a.m. Saturday)
The GF Sertoma will be feature several top ranked teams in the region including West Fargo. … Count on a lot of good grappling at this one. … This tournament is a good warm up to the Rumble on the Red.
