After a few weeks of holidays and bitter cold, the North Dakota preps sports scene is starting to heat up for a big stretch run in the month of January.
Here are some Mix Picks for this week:
1. ND CLASS B BOYS BASKETBALL: Fargo Oak Grove at Central Cass, 7:45 p.m. tonight.
The North Dakota District 2 boys basketball season is now in full swing and this matchup between the Grovers and Squirrels will have big implications on the standings. Oak Grove is 8-1 and 3-0 in District 2 play. Central Cass is 5-3 overall and 1-2 against District 2 opponents. The Squirrels are 2-2 at home this season with both losses coming against Kindred and No.1-ranked Milnor.
2. ND CLASS B BOYS BASKETBALL: Milnor at Kindred, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
Milnor – defending Class B boys basketball state champions – have been ranked No. 1 all season and travel to Kindred. The Bison (10-0) host Maple Valley tonight so it will be interesting to see if the champs can do a quick turnaround and perform against a very talented Vikings squad. Kindred is 6-2 overall and has a 2-1 record at home losing a tight game to Oak Grove last Friday. This game also will feature three of Region 1’s best hoopsters in Briton Bussman and Wyatt Mund of Milnor and Eric Bachmeier of Kindred.
3. WRESTLING: West Fargo at Moorhead, 7:30 p.m. Thursday
This cross-state dual has become an annual draw for local wrestling fans. Both programs are very deep and every year produce grapplers that contend for postseason championships. West Fargo narrowly won last year’s meeting with the Spuds and this year’s dual could very well be another close one. The Spuds a 9-2 overall and 1-1 in Class 3A, Section 8. The Packers have cracked the InterMat Fab 50 rankings once this season and are 12-2 overall with a 4-0 record in the East Region. This dual will be high school grappling at its finest.
4. BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER: Fargo Davies at Fargo North (girls game tips off at 5:45 p.m., boys 7:30 p.m. Friday)
Davies girls basketball has been ranked all season, but fell 74-34 against Fargo Shanley last Friday. The Eagles (4-2, 3-2 EDC) will look to right the ship this week with gamest against Grand Forks Central tonight and North on Friday. The Spartans (2-3, 1-2 EDC) this season and have a lot of perimeter shooters. On the boys side, Davies looks to rebound from an overtime loss to Fargo South last Saturday. The Eagles could slip in the polls a bit, but the team is still an offensive threat every time they hit the court. Count on the Spartans to account for Tanner Kretchman and Andrew Kozlowski.
5. BOYS BASKETBALL: Oak Grove Shootout at Fargo Civic Center (six games, 1st game tips off at Noon Saturday)
Six boys basketball games are set for Saturday at the Fargo Civic Center. Several of the matchups feature ND vs. MN, which are always entertaining. Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page vs. Hankinson begins at Noon followed by Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton vs. Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah at approximately 1:30 p.m. Barnesville plays Richland at 3:15 p.m., Hawley plays Kindred at 5 p.m., Central Cass plays Fosston at 6:30 p.m. and the shootout wraps with the host team Fargo Oak Grove playing Grafton at 8 p.m.
